AccuQuilt fabric cutting system – machines, dies and accessories available at Quilt Direct

From Rotary Cutter to AccuQuilt: Is It Time to Make the Switch?

Categories:

If you've ever spent an afternoon hunched over a cutting mat with a rotary cutter and ruler, you'll know how time-consuming - and tiring - accurate fabric cutting can be. The AccuQuilt system was designed to change that. By replacing slow, imprecise hand cutting with a simple rolling action through precision steel dies, it delivers perfectly accurate shapes in a fraction of the time, with far less physical effort.

As the UK Exclusive Supplier for AccuQuilt, Quilt Direct offers the complete range, backed by expert advice from our in-house team and specialist tutors.

Why Buy an AccuQuilt Cutter?

The reasons for investing in an AccuQuilt machine are as varied as the quilters who use them. For many, it's the speed and accuracy that first attracts them. For others, like our in-house tutor Karen, it's the ease of cutting that makes all the difference - particularly for those with arthritic hands or limited grip strength. Whatever your reason, the precision and consistency of the AccuQuilt system are benefits that every quilter can enjoy.

In addition to a choice of cutting machines, there is a huge selection of dies to choose from.

What Types of Dies Are Available?

  • Piecing Dies - strips, triangles, squares, hexagons and more
  • Appliqué Dies - a huge selection of decorative shapes including animals, flowers, seasonal designs and much more
  • Qubes and Sets - coordinated shapes that work together in a variety of sizes, ideal for traditional patchwork
  • Project Blanks - dies for items such as luggage tags, bucket hats, wallets and tree skirts

What Accessories Are Available?

  • Mats - You will need a mat for your dies. The size required is indicated on the website and on the die packaging. You will not need a separate mat for every die.
  • Storage - Specially designed storage boxes, racks and totes to keep your dies organised.
  • Books - Several books are available on how to get the most from your dies.
  • Miscellaneous - Die picks, rotary cutting mats, rulers, AccuQuilt fabrics, rotary cutters and die catchers.

Is the AccuQuilt System Wasteful?

Far from it - and the key is sub-cutting. Rather than placing a large piece of fabric on the die, you cut it down to roughly the size of the die first. For example, if you're using die 55063 (half square triangle, 2" finished), the cutting area is 6½" x 7½", so you'd sub-cut your fabric to approximately 7" x 8". Running four layers through the AccuQuilt gives you 48 perfectly cut triangles with minimal waste - a significant improvement over the traditional square-on-rectangle method.
