Appliqué Threads

There are many techniques and almost as many different threads you may like to use for hand or machine appliqué, each creating a different effect and allowing you to achieve the finish that best suits your project. This collection brings together a carefully curated selection of thread ranges that we recommend for both hand and machine appliqué.

For traditional hand appliqué we recommend Aurifil 80 weight cotton, Mettler 60 weight cotton or YLI Silk 100 weight. These exceptionally fine threads settle gently into the fabric and create precise, delicate stitches that are barely visible.

For machine appliqué, whether digital or decorative, Aurifil 50 weight cotton and Mettler Polysheen provide smooth and reliable results with a clean and well controlled edge. A heavier 40 weight or 28 weight thread can also look beautiful when the design calls for a more pronounced and decorative finish.

Invisible threads are available when you wish the stitching to disappear completely, making them ideal for invisible stitch appliqué.
