Rotary Cutters: Choosing the Right Size
Rotary cutters come in several blade sizes, each suited to different tasks. The blade size refers to the diameter in millimetres.
- 18mm - ideal for tight curves and small intricate shapes. Less suited to straight cuts through multiple layers. Available in Clover 18mm and Olfa 18mm.
- 28mm - a good all-rounder for curves and smaller projects. Available in Clover 28mm and Olfa 28mm.
- 45mm - the most popular size for quilting. Cuts cleanly through multiple layers of cotton with ease. Available from Clover, Olfa, Tula Pink and Fiskars.
- 60mm - the heavy-duty option, ideal for cutting through many layers or thick fabrics. Available in Clover 60mm, Olfa 60mm Original Handle and Olfa 60mm Curved Handle.
For most quilters, a 45mm cutter is the workhorse of the cutting table. A 28mm or 18mm is worth having for curved work and appliqué.
Cutting Mats: Protecting Your Blades and Your Table
A good self-healing cutting mat is essential. It protects your work surface, extends blade life and provides a stable base for accurate cutting. Key things to look for: a self-healing surface, clear grid markings and a size that suits your workspace.

Caring for Your Cutting Mat
A well-maintained mat lasts for years. A neglected one can warp, lose its self-healing properties and damage your blades. There are two excellent approaches to mat maintenance available at Quilt Direct.

General mat care tips:
- Keep mats away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as they can cause warping.
- Store flat; never roll or lean against a wall for long periods.
- Rotate your mat regularly so you're not always cutting in the same area.
Rulers: Omnigrid and Omnigrip

Omnigrip
Omnigrip rulers feature the same accurate markings as Omnigrid but with a specialised non-slip backing that grips the fabric as you cut, reducing the risk of the ruler shifting mid-cut. This makes them particularly popular with quilters who cut through multiple layers or work at speed. The non-slip surface is a genuine game-changer for accuracy and safety.

Adding Grip to Any Ruler
If you already have rulers you love but find them slipping, there are several excellent solutions:
- Omnigrid Invisi-Grip Roll 12" x 36" - a clear, non-slip material that you cut to size and apply to the underside of any ruler. Virtually invisible, it grips the fabric firmly without marking it and can be repositioned as needed, the ideal companion to the Omnigrid range.
- Odif Grippy Spray 150ml - a repositionable adhesive spray applied to the underside of any ruler to add grip instantly. Dries quickly and can be reapplied as needed.
- Quilter's Rule ¼" Grip Stop Dots - small adhesive dots applied to the underside of rulers to prevent slipping. Discreet and effective.
Marking Repeat Measurements: Glow-Line Tape
One of the most useful but lesser-known ruler accessories is Omnigrid Glow-Line Tape (¼" x 21yds, pack of 3 rolls). This fluorescent tape is applied directly to your ruler to mark a specific measurement you need to cut repeatedly, such as a 2½" strip or a specific seam allowance. Instead of re-reading the ruler markings on every cut, the tape gives you an instant visual reference, speeding up repetitive cutting and reducing errors. It peels away cleanly without leaving residue.
Blade Care: Sharpening and Replacing
A sharp blade is a safe blade. A dull blade requires more pressure, increasing the risk of slips and inaccurate cuts. If your cutter is dragging or skipping threads rather than cutting cleanly, it's time to act.

Even with regular sharpening, blades do eventually need replacing. Always dispose of old blades safely.
A Note on Safety
Rotary cutters are extremely sharp tools. Always close the safety guard after every cut, cut away from your body, and keep cutters out of children's reach. A good habit from the start makes for a lifetime of safe cutting.
Taking It Further: AccuQuilt
Rotary cutting is fast and accurate, but AccuQuilt has taken precision fabric cutting to a new level entirely. Using steel-rule dies and a mechanical cutter, AccuQuilt cuts multiple layers of fabric into perfectly shaped pieces in a single pass, with no rulers, no rotary cutter and no risk of slipping.
