Join us for a 6-week introductory course designed to give you a strong foundation in dressmaking. Whether you are brand new to sewing or have limited experience and want to build confidence, this course will equip you with the essential skills to begin creating beautiful, professional-looking garments.
Meet Your Tutor: Jill Vaughan
Jill is a highly experienced professional dressmaker and tutor who is a well known member of the Quilt Direct family, having spent many years both in the shop and in our studio. Her warm, patient, and encouraging teaching style will guide and inspire you every step of the way.
What You’ll Learn
Over the six sessions, you’ll cover the fundamentals of dressmaking, including:

Choosing the Right Pattern
Bring your own or choose from a curated selection of beginner-friendly patterns. -
Taking and Using Measurements
Learn how to accurately take body measurements and adjust patterns for the perfect fit. -
Fabric Fundamentals
Understand fabric properties, drape, and how to select the right material for your chosen pattern and garment. -
Pattern Layout and Cutting
Learn how to lay out patterns efficiently and cut out your fabric with confidence. -
Core Sewing Techniques
Master sewing machine basics, hand stitching, and foundational techniques like hemming, gathering, and pleating. -
Fitting and Construction
Prepare, fit, and assemble your garment with the guidance you need to succeed.
By the end of the course, you may complete a simple, wearable garment—depending on your pace and progress—and you'll gain the skills and confidence to continue developing your sewing practice.

- A working sewing machine (you can hire a machine from us if required)
- Basic sewing kit (thread, tacking thread, pins, small fine and large fabric cutting scissors, tape measure etc.)
